About Our Medical Director
Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation - Village Square has two Medical Directors on staff, Dr. Karl E. Steinberg and Dr. Sonia Ahuja.
Dr. Karl E. Steinberg has served as our center’s Medical Director since 2008 and as our Attending Physician since 1994. Dr. Steinberg is Board Certified in family medicine and holds a certificate of added qualification in hospice & palliative medicine. He is also a Certified Medical Director.
Dr. Steinberg is an active member of California Association of Long Term Care Medicine (CALTCM), California Physician's Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment Task Force, San Diego County Medical Society Bioethics Commission, American Medical Directors Association, American Geriatrics Society, Gerontological Society of America, American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, California Association of Health Facilities, California Medical Association and International Psychogeriatric Association.
When Dr. Steinberg has free time, he enjoys playing tennis, the guitar and spending time with his dogs.
Sonia Ahuja, MD, attended medical school in India and has been a research assistant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the Atherosclerosis Research Institute, both in Los Angeles. Her post-graduate training was at the University of Arizona and she worked as a hospitalist in several Southern California hospitals. Currently she is on staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas.
Of her work at Village Square, she says, “this facility provides comprehensive, quality medical care, staffed with highly trained RNs. Hence, I feel comfortable and confident taking care of my sick patients here.”
